Registration levels
The BDAQ agree with the NRF Levels as these align well with the National Building Design Training package qualifications. They also align well with the current Queensland Building Construction Commission (QBCC) licensing levels for Building Designers.
Descriptions/definitions
Table 1 – NRF Taxonomy Document
Discipline – This definition should be clearer to read; “Building Design” (includes architects, building designers & draftsperson)
Scope of work
The BDAQ support the scope of work provided in each Level as they all generally align with the Queensland current Building Design licensing system.
BDAQ Comments;
Must include ‘graduate diploma of building design and degree in building design (The degree covers those universities that provide these courses)
This AQF level is inconsistent with a degree (AQF 7) but does cover the advanced diploma. Perhaps this Qualification should read ‘AQF 7/8?
Level 2
Type: Restricted
Qualification: AQF 6
BDAQ Comments;
Must include ‘advanced diploma of building design’. The reference to ‘diploma of building design should be removed as it is covered under Level 3.
The QBCC in QLD refer to this as ‘Medium Rise’ as this is a better descriptor. This AQF level covers the advanced diploma (see note above about including it in the Qualification list).
Level 3
Type: Limited
Qualification: AQF 4/5
BDAQ Comments;
The wording ‘Approved certificate IV or diploma in building design or architectural drafting that includes NCC training’ is repeated! The QBCC in QLD refer to this as ‘Low Rise’ as this is a better descriptor.
Note: The words ‘architectural drafting’ are obsolete and the BDAQ believe should be removed.
Experience requirements
The BDAQ support the experience requirements set out in the NRF paper.
Any other comments for this discipline
In general, the BDAQ believes the NRF is a well-documented paper that further enhances the profession of Building Design in Queensland.
