I do not think access consultants should be seen as part of the design category but rather should be in the compliance area. Our skills rely on issues well outside the design field and include understanding of the relationship between design and use of a building by people with a range of disability and determining the relative risk factors associated with Performance Solution approach especially in the areas of existing building upgrade. While we have a role in the design phase of a building our role is best described as compliance.
Qualification requirements
Many access consultants come from a human rights perspective rather than a design perspective and that adds value to projects. Making access consultants come through the design education perspective risk devaluing the importance of a human rights perspective.

For the current generation of access consultants a grandfathering mechanism will be critical.
Experience requirements
I support the need for proven experience and continuing education requirements.
