The term “heat exchanger” is defined in AS/NZS 3500.0 and has a meaning that is not consistent with the usage in this Clause. The definition of this term also does not mention the important physical characteristics of the plate heat exchanger.

Delete the existing text and replace with:
“An assembly consisting of a series of plates joined together to form two separate fluid circuits, so that heat may transfer between the two fluids.”

The concept of PREN (Pitting resistance equivalent number) is applicable only to Stainless Steels. Nowhere in the document does it say that the plates must be made from Stainless Steel.
The need for corrosion resistance does not apply only to the parts in contact with drinking water, since other fluids may be equally corrosive.
The need for corrosion resistance does not apply only to the parts in contact with drinking water, since other fluids may be equally corrosive.
Proposed change
Either:
Amend the Scope so that the WMTS applies only to PHEs constructed with stainless steel plates. Delete the word “drinking” from this clause.
Or:
Delete the existing text of the clause and replace with:
“The parts of plate heat exchangers in contact with water shall be made from corrosion-resistant materials as specified in AS 3688.
Stainless steel materials in contact with water shall have a PREN of 22 or greater.”

AS 3688 specifies requirements for fittings and end connections, not for water supply pipe work, as implied by the text of this clause.
The words “Double wall plate heat exchangers” are clearly intended to be the heading for a separate Clause 8.2 and are not part of Clause 8.1.

Comment

The second paragraph refers to the undefined term “double wall” and hence its meaning is unclear. If it is intended to apply to a “double wall heat exchanger” (as defined in AS/NZS 3500.0) then the requirement is unreasonable. In order to achieve their function, DWHEs are constructed so that most of the surface of most of the plates is not visible and hence any failure of the wall cannot be visibly evident under normal conditions.
Proposed change
Delete the words:
“Double wall Plate Heat Exchangers
For plate heat exchangers that include a double wall the failure of one wall shall be visibly evident.”
“Double wall Plate Heat Exchangers
For plate heat exchangers that include a double wall the failure of one wall shall be visibly evident.”
